New USPSA Shooter Getting Started Guide

What is Action Shooting?

Many groups run action shooting events. They range from USPSA, IPSC, IDPA, 3-Gun, Steel Challenge, SASS, and others not mentioned. We shoot USPSA, which allows you to use most pistols and PCCs. Shooters compete against others in the same division (gun type) and class (current shooting ability). The stages vary; most will use cardboard targets, falling steel, and other props like walls, ports, tables, and doors. USPSA has strict safety protocols, with shooters under the direct supervision of a RO to help new and experienced shooters run the stages in a fun and safe manner. We encourage you to look up videos online showing USPSA matches and check out the USPSA Website

What Do I Need?

Most people think they need a lot of fancy gear and expensive guns to shoot in competition. While some divisions and shooters have all the latest equipment, you don't need anything special to start shooting a match. We suggest a semi-auto handgun or revolver in 9mm-45 auto, a holster covering the trigger and securing the gun (no Blackhawk Serpa holsters), 2-3 extra magazines with a mag holder, and your eye and ear protection. Most of our stages are 12-32 rounds, and we have 4 stages in total. Therefore, it's best to bring 125+ rounds of ammo.

How Do I Join a Match?

If this is your first USPSA match, we have a New Shooter Safety Briefing 45 minutes before the match starts. The briefing goes over the safety items for the match, how scoring works, and the match flow. Learn what to expect when you're the shooter and how to help your squad when you're not the shooter. We review your gear setup and help optimize everything for you to participate in the match. The safety briefing is free and required to shoot during the match. Independence Firearms and Training does offer advanced classes on competition shooting and shooting skills. You'll be surprised at how welcoming and helpful the experienced shooters are during the match. You can ask just about anyone for assistance during the match. We have a friendly shooting community that encourages new shooters. You can register through this page or find the match on Pracitscore to sign up. If signing up on Practiscore, you'll need an account.

We encourage you to come out and attend one of our matches. It'll be a fun, exhilarating day!
